This year marked my purification of self-restriction. I always had the need to watch, play or read a series of media from the beginning to the end. But this behaviour led to a little depression for me. I sat at home, not knowing what I wanted to do with my given time.
This year I, kind of, broke free from my own chains. And with that freed feeling, I want to elect my “Picks of the Year”:
CLARIFICATION: I am not restricting myself to titles released in 2018, but titles I watched/played/read during the last year. It is a highly subjective list!
TV series of the year
The ReadPlayWatch-year-award for the TV series of the year 2018 goes to Black Mirror for showing controversial topics that plague our community in a fascinating way. Black Mirror was the first, and frankly, best show I’ve watched 2018.
Movie of the year
The ReadPlayWatch-year-award for the movie of the year 2018 goes to The Greatest Showman, for providing an excellent soundtrack, superb dancing performances and absolute goosebumps during the first half of the movie. If you haven’t seen it by now, go and watch it!
Game of the year
The ReadPlayWatch-year-award for the game of the year goes to Assassin’s Creed Origins, for providing an excellent game for falling in love with gaming once more, helping me out of this “I don’t know what to play”-feeling I had during the whole spring. Yes, Origins had its flaws, was not perfect by any means but was game that took me on a journey through ancient Egypt I needed at this time. Giving me also the chance to complete it to 100% without any feeling of “work” and keeping my interest until the last second.
Book of the year
The ReadPlayWatch-year-award for the book of the year goes to Love, Simon. An excellent book about a gay boy who struggles with his everyday teenage life. Huge thanks to my English teacher (go and check out her blog) who made the book club read the book and giving me the best reading experience since The Hate You Give. Thank you!
Prospects
These were all amazing titles I watched, read and played during this, sometimes, very stressful year.
At the end of this article, I am able to give out happy news. This website will be up and running till the end of 2020. If Trump hasn’t blown us all to the moon and back or if I don’t have that much stress during the second term and my senior year 2019/2020, I might be able to write more reviews and opinions.
To give you an overview of what to come next: Currently, I am writing a review for Star Wars: Episode VIII. Next up, I try to prioritize titles on this list for publishing a review. Thank you all for reading my little blog in 2018 and I am thrilled to continue next year.
Wishing you all a great start into the new year 2019,
Eric C. Reid
